Job positions at the Nea Manolada strawberry farms in the Peloponnese were posted on the OAED unemployment office only a few days before the end of picking season, Kathimerini understands.
“A large number of unemployed who accepted the job offer said they met with closed doors,” a local OAED employee told Kathimerini. “[The producers] told them they could not hire them because work was over,” the official said. “The whole thing was obviously a publicity stunt,” another employee said.
A total of 113 strawberry producers in Nea Manolada, the site of an infamous shooting over a pay dispute earlier this year, allegedly posted the ad on June 7 looking for more than 4,500 workers to be paid 25 euros a day.
